- Enterprise Networks
-
- Boosts LAN-To-IBM Host Computer Integration; Extends LAN Access
- Nine Vendors Announce Products That Leverage Platform
-
- Sunnyvale, Calif. -- March 31, 1992 -- Novell Inc., today announced it is
- expanding NetWare Communication Services, its open communications services
- platform for enterprise network integration, with the announcements of:
-
- ~ NetWare for SAA v1.2, Novell's premier LAN-to-host connectivity software;
-
- ~ NetWare Asynchronous Communication Services (NACS) v3.0, a NetWare
- Loadable Module (NLM) that enables NetWare users to access and share
- communications resources such as modems, asynchronous hosts and X.25
- network services;
-
- ~ NLMs, hardware and software connectivity products developed by nine
- third-party vendors which leverage these new releases to provide complete
- business-wide solutions.
-
- "NetWare Communication Services provides an open development environment for
- vendors to build the business-wide connectivity solutions our customers have
- requested," said Ray Noorda, Novell president and CEO. "This platform is open
- to anyone who wishes to integrate their communications product into the
- NetWare environment and take advantage of the performance, security, name
- services and network management features we provide."
-
- "At Tangram, we were particularly interested in the LAN-to-host connectivity
- that NetWare for SAA delivers, " said Chris Jesse, Tangram's president and
- CEO. "NetWare Communication Services provided us with the stable development
- platform we were looking for to port AM:PM, our software distribution and data
- collection package, into the NetWare environment."
-
- "We saw NetWare Communication Services as an ideal platform for enhancing and
- integrating our Asynchronous and X.25 Communications Interface products into
- the NetWare environment" said Larry Stephenson, president, Newport Systems
- Solutions. "We've worked closely with Novell and will continue to as our
- products are enhanced to meet our customer's needs."
-
- NetWare Communication Services is an open network integration platform
- available to all third-party developers; future enhancements will be announced
- as they become available.
-
- Following is a list of third-party vendors which have developed NLMs, hardware
- and software solutions that support the NetWare Communication Services
- platform. These products either leverage NetWare for SAA v1.2 as the
- LAN-to-host connection/data transport for their products, or leverage NACS
- v3.0 as the asynchronous communications link to the enterprise.
-

- Asynchronous I/O specification and NACS v3.0.
-
- NetWare Communication Services Manager v1.0
-
- Novell today announced it will begin shipping the NetWare Communication
- Services Manager (CSM) v1.0, its Windows-based network management application
- for managing Novell communications services including NetWare for SAA v1.2 and
- NACS v3.0 from anywhere on a NetWare network.
-
- The NetWare CSM v1.0 is based on Novell's NetWare Management System (NMS) core
- technology, allowing it to operate concurrently with other Novell network
- management tools.
-
- "The NetWare Communication Services Manager was designed specifically to meet
- the network management challenges created as users extend their network
- services beyond the LAN to include IBM connectivity and enterprise
- communications, " said Gerry Machi, vice president and general manager,
- NetWare Systems Group--Sunnyvale.
-
- "We support a large number of users. Sometimes in the past when we received a
- tech-support call for communication services it could be difficult to identify
- the source of the problem. Now with the CSM, we can see exactly what is going
- on anywhere on the network; there are no 'blind spots'," said Dan Kohner,
- network services team leader for the University of Texas/MD Anderson Cancer
- Center. "The CSM became the missing patch we used to sew our network
- environment into one big quilt."
-
- CSM provides a comprehensive set of network management tools for fault,
- performance and configuration management for any service built on the NetWare
- Communication Services platform. The product minimizes service downtime
- through real-time fault management. It immediately notifies network managers
- of NetWare for SAA and NACS events through audible and visual alerts. For
- events requiring intervention, it suggests diagnostic and remedial actions.
-
- CSM supports Window's Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE). This allows statistics to
- be linked to DDE applications such as Microsoft Excel spreadsheets. In
- addition, CSM provides enhanced security through its ability to access and
- manipulate audit trail logs of communication services usage. Also, and Event
- Monitor can be configured to receive real-time notification of potential
- security violations.
-
- NetWare Communication Services
-
- Novell first announced the concept of NetWare Communication Services in June,
- 1990 and began delivering the first modules of the platform with the shipment
- of NetWare for SAA 1.0 in May, 1991. NetWare Communications Services
- products give users access to host resources and wide area networks. It's the
- first completely integrated LAN communications system designed to support any
- combination of LAN-to-host, LAN-to-LAN or remote LAN access services.
-
- Pricing and Availability
-
- NetWare Communication Services Manager v1.0 will be available in May, 1992.
- Effective from the first customer shipment through July 31, 1992 CSM will be
- available to Novell's distribution channel at a discounted price. End users
- should expect to see discounts of up to 30 percent off the standard list
- pricing (United States and Canada) of $4,995. For pricing outside the United
- States and Canada, customers should contact their local Novell authorized
